North Allegheny School District | Franklin Elementary

This project nearly doubled the size of the existing Franklin Elementary and provided the ability for North Allegheny School District to expand the school capacity. The building addition has a 2-story steel framed classroom addition and a 1-story masonry addition to house a new kitchen, cafeteria, stage and large group instruction spaces. Construction on the addition started in spring of 2019 and finished in fall 2020. During the both summer of 2019 and 2020 all other rooms in the existing building were renovated to update the mechanical systems, floor and wall finishes.

This project was constructed while the existing school was in operation, so close coordination between Massaro and the building principal/staff was made to ensure school operations could proceed without issue.

The project started in April of 2019 and reached turnover of the kitchen and cafeteria addition in March, 2020. The classroom addition and renovated spaces were complete and ready for start of school in September of 2020 with the administrative addition and renovation turned over and occupied in early October 2020.

This project was managed through the start of the Covid19 Pandemic. In March of 2020 this project was shut down along with all construction in the State. In coordination with NASD this project was petitioned to be classified as an “essential” project. Within 2 weeks of the shut down the project was back to work under modified protocols. Massaro managed this major project change, balancing the new constraints to ultimately maintain the original desired completion date.
